In 2015, a permanent exhibition was opened at Ljubljana Castle, alongside the establishment of a museum department within the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, which has since been systematically caring for Slovenia’s puppet heritage. At the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, we curate content, organise temporary exhibitions, and continuously document, research, interpret, and present puppetry heritage through various domestic and international projects. Some of the most important milestones of our rich and diverse puppetry history are showcased in the permanent exhibition at Ljubljana Castle, which attracts over 100,000 visitors annually.
In our archives, we preserve Slovenia’s largest puppet collection, containing over 7,000 puppets, stage elements, and set designs. Each year, we organise several temporary exhibitions titled Dusted, where we explore, restore, and present puppetry heritage that didn’t make it into the permanent exhibition.
Through the Puppet Diaries project, we document intangible puppet heritage – the stories of Slovenian puppeteers and collaborators. The museum also hosts a conservation and restoration workshop, which plays a key role not only in preserving but also reviving this heritage. The Ljubljana Puppet Theatre regularly revives old puppet classics—called puppetheque performances—using replicas of original puppets. The Puppet Museum ensures that these masterpieces from Slovenia’s rich puppet legacy can still be enjoyed today and preserved for future generations.
